Welcome to our class language & presentation skills blog & welcome to TOA!
In the next 12 weeks, we will be exploring and learning about presentations;
its role in social & business communication, presentation theories and strategies
on how to be an effective presenter. The course will begin by asking questions like 'Who am I', 'Why should I learn to be a good presenter', discussing what is motivation and self esteem and how these attributes affect us in becoming an effective learner. We will then identifying the 6 Steps to writing and delivering an impactful presentation.
You are encouraged to post any questions, discussion points on presentation.
You may reply to your classmates' posts and respond with your own ideas and thoughts. This way you will learn from each other. There are no real rules in this blog! But remember that it is important to be courteous in your writing. It is also a good idea to always check your work and use the spell check before you publish so your thoughts are coherent and easy for others to follow.
Blogs are great communication tools so in order to make the most out of them, each of you are encouraged to participate here! Make this place an extension of your own blog! Start by introducing yourself: name, interests, hobbies and what makes you happy!

Hi, Teacher May-Ann. erm, I think I’ll stick with the "teacher" thing, is more respectful and comfortable. Anyway, my name is Pang, I think you have already know who I am.
Well, today is my first day in ck class and I really enjoy listening, fast and clear speaker is what I always dream to become. But still, English is not my native, I’m still trying to get used to it.
Straight to my question (problems):
I’m not a quick leaner especially in language, couldn’t rush, and memorize is a big problem for me, so most of time while I get to present, I started to lose control, is like erm…personality problem? I guess, what I mean is…every presenter has stress right? who’s not? But mine is critical… no matter how calm and fully prepared, my body temperature start dropping during the last min before battle, it makes me feel uncomfortable and then nightmare begins. Usually it happens during exams …if is not cold then stomachache happens…I was like ‘what the heck, not again…’.
I figure out a way which is “I don’t care whether I pass or not”, and it works!
But this solution doesn’t fit during my presentation, I can’t suddenly stop talking and think what I’m trying to say next…which u mention today, lagging.
So…basically condition and lagging is my problem, any advice that might help?
kinda long, sorry :>
Hi Pang,
Thank you for posting & thanks for sharing. We will be dealing with some of your concerns in class during the next 12 weeks.
However, I would like to give some helpful suggestions at this stage:-
i) Presentations do not necessarily come easy to most people. The understated issue is that most people do not prepare or rehearse enough hence their performance suffers. Spend time preparing & rehearsing before a presentation.
ii) Take deep breaths before and during your presentation, think positively. People do want you to succeed. Remember that you are among your classmates. They are learners too and they are there to support you, not be critical or judgmental about your performance.
iii) Try using note cards during your presentations. Jot down your key points to help you to remember. This is acceptable. Even professional speakers have note cards. Don't be afraid to use them
We shall discuss more at class this wed. See you then ;-)
Dear MayAnn,
This is Hana from cd078-2, hahaha....
You know, i can't think of what i must present on "How to...?
It's very confusing, and i can't think of any idea...
HAiyaaa, could you give me some advice?
i'm thinking of presenting something like "HOw to behave yourself if you go on dinner..."
it's such a long title, heheheh....
or "How to Make people bored.."
Can i use that one?
Hana,
Thank you for your question and comments.
I am glad that you are using this blog to share your thoughts & 'think aloud' and hopefully you will feel more certain on selecting your topic. Often, we get ideas when we are sharing with others or when we research on our own.
I am not expecting a very serious topic so topics like "How to behave at dinner...or How to behave during a meal?" or "How to bore people..." are topics that can be fairly interesting with a great dose of humour!
Remember at the end of the presentation, I want you to SHOW not just tell. Use visuals, props, demonstrations etc to support your points. Ask yourself: What is the ONE SINGLE message you want your audience to take away from your presentation? Then, what are your 3 Support points to this main idea. You only have 10-15mins so the idea is not to overload the information but to keep the presentation simple, interesting and informative (add value to your audience).
Hope this helps.
Hey Ms. May Ann..Just checking your blog. Haven had anything in particular to ask you ...YET. But then may i suggest to have a comment box on your blog? It's nicer to communicate that way..and easier...
Btw..my blog add is www.soulfinder90.blogdrive.com. I'm still giving it a makeover.
